Adequate natural light access is mandatory for the following buildings in Australia:

  • Habitable rooms of Class 2 buildings, such as bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Habitable rooms of Class 4 buildings.
  • Patient rooms in a Class 9a or Class 9c buildings.
  • General purpose classrooms for primary and elementary schools of Class 9b buildings
  • Playrooms in an early childhood centre in a Class 9b building.

For all other types of commercial buildings, there are no such mandates, however, big commercial developments could be required to have high levels of daylight under ESD or Green Star commitments.
