Verification Using a Reference Building (VURB)

Our added value

We were engaged to undertake a VURB Alternative Solution to reduce the overall glazing cost of the proposed building. The client expected to achieve compliance for the proposed building with non-thermal break aluminium windows.

The chosen material for external walls was ICF, which aside from its positive impact on heating demand reduction (due to thermal mass), could accommodate a high R-value to reduce heat loss in winter. Therefore, the Total R-value of the proposed building’s external walls were 35% higher than that of the reference building. Since getting demand was the majour contributing factor for achieving energy compliance), we also allowed an under-slab insulation to a small portion of the concrete slab. With the adjustment of window U-values and SHGC through several iterations, we managed to increase the overall U-values from U2.6 to U2.9 (more than a 10% increase).
