Verification Using a Reference Building (VURB)
Our added value
We were engaged to undertake a VURB Performance Solution to reduce the glazing cost of a new dwelling in Marengo, VIC. The major source of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer was a 17m2 glass over the first floor’s roof letting in high amounts of daylight into living areas. We tried to offset heat loss due to this glass roof by filling the building with high-performing insulation and also 50mm rigid insulation to the slab. To deal with heat gain in winter, we optimised the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of windows and glazed doors after several iterations.
To achieve cost-effective compliance, the remaining buffer was filled with increasing overall window U-values. Finally, after several more iterations, we managed to increase the overall U-values from U2.7 to U3.8 (a 40% increase).
